This page shows you the settings needed for various devices and operating systems so that you can receive and send emails when you are using the Abthorpe Broadband Association / Tove Valley Communities Superfast Broadband service.

<- Select your email address's domain. If it does not appear here, we cannot help you with email settings. If you would like an email address attributed to one of these domains, ask us through the Contact Us page.

Use webmail to check your credentials.

First of all, if you have a name@abthorpe.net address, check that your username and password are correct by logging into webmail.
Do this by visiting webmail.
Type your username, which is your name followed by @abthorpe - e.g. sam.brown@abthorpe - DO NOT include the .net bit.
Type your email password, and click login.

You should be taken to the webmail page. If you get an authentication error message, your basic username and password information is incorrect and you must verify this before attempting other settings.

Once you have confirmed your username and password you can collect and send your emails through webmail wherever you can connect to the internet in the world.

Setting up an email client

If you are setting up your email account on a PC or mobile app, do not let the app try to connect automatically but go to the manual setup. You will normally have to enter the following information: (we use sam.brown@abthorpe.net as our example)

  • Email is your email address (eg sam.brown@abthorpe.net)
  • Username (sometimes called Account Name) will be sam.brown@abthorpe
  • Password will have been given to you or provided by you initially when you registered and subsequently by changing it through the Member Pages
  • Incoming Mail Server is mail.abthorpe.net   Check that the port number is 110 for pop or 143 for imap.
  • Outgoing Mail Server (sometimes called SMTP) is mail.abthorpe.net   Check that the port number is 25 or 2500. If you cannot send messages using port 25, try port 2500.
  • Security / Encription Should preferably be set to "Use SSL/TLS if available" otherwise use "none". Do not force to use SSL/TLS.
  • SMTP authenticationentication. Find “Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” or similar and select this, and use the same settings as the incoming mail server (usually another tick-box, or you may have to enter your username and password again (this is the case with Apple devices))

As a guide, you can find these settings here:

  • If you use Outlook Express, go to Tools>Accounts>Mail….
  • If you use Outlook, go to Tools>Email Accounts>View/change existing accounts….
  • If you use Windows 7 Live Mail, go to the Accounts tab>Properties>Servers
  • If you use Eudora go to Tools > Options > Getting Started…….
  • If you use Thunderbird go to Mail account settings….
  • If you use iOS (eg Apple iPad, iPhone etc) go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts….
  • If you use any other client email program on a PC, phone or tablet there will be a similar path to your account settings.

Accept all the entries right back to your email window and click the send/receive button. You should now be in business.

Other settings

If you log into webmail, there are various settings available to you:

  • You can reset your password for your mailbox account
  • You can set up an auto-responder
  • You can re-direct all mail to another email address

There is a maximum 500Mbytes total allowed storage of emails on the server.  In some circumstances we may increase this for you.
